CHAPTER ONE:
PRE- "LATE SHOW" DAVE

David Letterman was raised in Indianapolis. David's humor originated from his Grandfather. His grandfather's had a dry sense of humor and liked to make wisecracking comments. This must be why Letterman now calls himself a"first-class wiseass!!" Dave's father was silly and goofy as well.

David was born April 12, 1947. He has two siblings (both sisters). He was born to a middle class family. Dave would watch Johnny Carson and Steve Allen on their Tonight Show type shows of the time, and dream of being on television someday.
Dave attended Broad Ripple High in Indianapolis. Like most comedians that I have read about, Dave liked being the class clown. Later in college, Dave majored in Broadcasting. Dave attended Ball State University in Indiana.

Dave's first job was at WLWI-TV; ABC's channel 13, at the age of 20. There -he read news and hosted a children's show. He even hosted a Late Night Movie program and held a job as a Weather Anchor as well. During the sometimes boring Weather Cast, Dave would crack jokes - a prelude to his future. It was around this time that Dave married Michelle Cook. They met in college back in Indianapolis.

Dave decided to try talk radio for a while. It was a daytime 5,000-watt station. He contacted an agent in Hollywood. The agent liked him and said that he would represent Mr. Letterman if he came out to Hollywood. In 1975 Dave and Michelle set out for Hollywood. The agency closed up before Letterman arrived in Hollywood. Dave must have had a sinking feeling about what he was going to do now!

Next - Dave directed himself to the Comedy Store in Los Angeles. David enjoyed a large amount of success at the Comedy Store. He became friends with several of the Comedy Store entertainers. He was intelligent, honest, and creative. The owners repeatedly invited him to reappear. They must have realized that he was good for business.
