CHAPTER FIVE:
DAVE'S "LATE NIGHT" DEBUT
The marriage between
the Tonight Show and the newly created Late
Night with David Letterman was on - and there would
be no turning back for David Letterman and his Late Night
career.
The night that David's show debuted, he began to feel a
bit green. David carried on - and climbed aboard his Late
Night ship with great courage. Dave invited many
young comedians on his show. Bill Murray (From Saturday
Night Live) was the guest on as his first night.
Bill was so used to "Late Night Television"
that he entertained the crowd with his "Let's Get
Physical" act.
Late Night with David Letterman became a place
where young comedians could break into show business.
This is one of the reasons, in my opinion, that Dave's
show became a hit with the younger generation. The
comedians were quite intelligent and a lot of fun to
watch.
David's show was appealing to the crowd that would soon
become the major advertising dollars and high earning
populace of the nation at the time, the Yuppies and Baby
Boomers. On Dave's show - you could have fun, party, play
along, be part of the 'in' crowd.
With David's old staff at hand, you knew that wacky had
to enter the picture somewhere - now didn't you! Well
Dave dove right into wacky - in more ways than one -
literally so to speak!
On several occasions, Dave wore various suites of food -
a suit of Rice Krispies - just because he wanted to see
what it would be like to snap, crackle, and pop. Next, it
was a suit of corn chips and he dove into the yogurt dip.
One of my personal favorites was when David Letterman had
a show in which he would turn the camera lens 90 degrees
every fifteen minutes. At one point the show was watched
upside down. That definitely qualifies as wacky - I would
say. He threw watermelons, eggs, and I am sure that he
threw several other other things at that camera that I do
not recall.
David was brilliant when he decided to start including
the staff into the show. The fact that you feel that you
are behind the scenes during the entire show - and that
you know most of his staff - is a bonding experience
between Dave and the audience. Dave's show simply has you
on the "edge of your seat" so to speak. His
show was as exciting to watch then, as it is to watch
now! I know that I unwind with Dave and a glass of wine -
he's a great stress reliever. I can't sleep at night
without my Dave! Now wait a minute - that's not what I
meant. Ha. Ha. I mean that I have to watch his show
before I can sleep . Wow, I am glad I cleared that up!
Ha, Ha.
Late Night With David Letterman was just plain
fun!! Late Night with David Letterman was
becoming a big HIT and I will bet that David Letterman
was very thankful that his late night dreams were coming
true.
