CHAPTER SIX:
DAVE EARNS MONEY FOR NBC
By 1985 - David
Letterman's show became THE show to watch. It was a HIT.
Many NBC advertisers were now asking for a spot on the Late
Night before they were asking about the Tonight
Show. David Letterman's popularity grew - and his
viewing audience grew to over 4 million viewers. And this
was in a time slot that had never existed before, too.
The Late Night SHOW LINE UP ( Letterman's and Carson's
show combined) was now making $70 million for NBC. This
was up $20 million now that the Letterman's show went on
the air. In addition, Emmys and Awards now appeared. And
now - the subject of Letterman inheriting the Carson
Kingdom was rampant.
But David would have to compete for the Tonight Show despite
his success. The Late Night Television Show explosion was
about to take place on three networks.
